about

When Garfields Birthday released this, their second studio album, they were incredibly into their 15th year! Of course there had been changes in the line-up, but the core of the band (brothers Shane and Simon Felton) remained constant. Following on from 2008’s very well-received album 'Let Them Eat Cake', the band decided on a new approach for their latest release and expanded the line-up with the addition of new guitarist Leighton McGrath. The music may sound reassuringly familiar, full of their trademark melodies, up front vocals and harmonies, but its creation proved quite a departure. In the past, songs were usually taken straight out of the live set and recorded very quickly; often 3 or 4 tracks being completed in just a few hours. This is a great way of getting things done, but they were always up against the clock – both in terms of paying for the recording and the logistics of getting everyone in the same place at the same time for long enough to achieve anything!

A couple of years ago Shane had to stop playing live after a series of painful and complex operations on his back. During his long and gradual recovery he decided to set up his own studio (a converted summer house in his back garden) which was christened AlienIgloo. A few of the tracks on 'More Sense Than Money' are songs that have been part of their live set for a while now, but the majority are new compositions that were brought to life in the studio. The freedom to experiment with sounds and try out different ideas arguably gives the new album more depth and maturity; there are still plenty of catchy songs with chiming guitars and killer hooks, but the added ingredients hopefully make for an even more interesting and enjoyable listening experience!

The album also features the first ever writing collaboration by Shane and Simon in the album opener ‘Cool Your Jets’! Other new pop gems include a tribute to the loyal supporters of a weekly karaoke session that takes place in one of Weymouth’s myriad of pubs; a dreamy account of a memorable weekend spent in Cambridge; and Simon doing his best to sound like Cher on a song originally written back in the 1990s with his friend and talented guitarist Lee Cole, who sadly passed away a few years later. An eclectic album for sure, but with a POP theme running throughout and enough surprises to keep both new and loyal GB fans happy for around 41.3 minutes!
